A vibrant, concentrated ruby colour. Intense exotic nose of black cherries, raspberries, herbs and forest floor. On the palate this is a lovely, rich, concentrated mouthful, with complex ripe fruit, firm tannins and high acidity. Intensely savoury, with great balance. Cellar 5-10 years.
The fruit for the 2006 'Mietta' Pinot Noir was sourced from a section of the estate vineyard that has always produced fruit of great density of flavour and a certain earthiness. The soil in this section is very shallow, with only 30-45 cm of soil before a basalt rock layer. The vines are MV6 in theory; however the bunch architecture, bunch size (only 35-50 g) and flavours are unlike any other MV6 vines on the property. It is possible that we have a mutated clone of MV6 which in combination with the soil differences produces this distinctive wine. The fruit for the 2006 'Mietta' was picked at 13.5 Bé and pH 3.25 from vines yielding 0.75 tonnes/acre. Picking was done by hand during the first weeks of April. Fruit was destemmed with the exception of 30% which was included as whole bunches. Pre-fermentation maceration ensued for approximately 7-10 days, until indigenous yeast fermentation started. Fermentation in small 1000L open vats proceeded for 7 days with pigéage 4 times per day; fermentation temperature peaked at 30°C. Fermentation was followed by up to 20 days post-fermentation maceration. Pressing was straight to barrel (45% new French oak) to allow for gross lees contact. Wine in barrel underwent natural MLF, which finished in October 2006. Wines were racked twice throughout the maturation period and then bottled without filtration in August 2007.
