In 1853 Friedrich Koch planted this Mourvèdre vineyard in the heart of the Barossa Valley in the area now known as Rowland Flat. Nurtured in deep sand over a bed of limestone the vines flourished. By the 1880s the local vignerons had already acknowledged the vineyard as the Old Garden. To the end of the 19th Century, throughout the 20th Century and now into the 21st Century subsequent generations of Koch's family have tended these vines in the traditions of the Barossa: bush vines, no irrigation, hand pruned and hand harvested. Today nothing has changed. Old Garden is likely to be the oldest Mourvèdre vineyard in the world.
2007 was a drought and the driest conditions that the Old Garden had seen in a long while. The yields were extremely low and the vines delivered their tiny berries in early April and in perfect condition.
The wine was matured in 100% new French barriques for twelve months providing structure, while complimenting the grape tannin and the terroir-based flavour profile of black, glazed cherries, dark chocolate, mocha and even orange peel that manifests itself each year in this single vineyard wine. This demonstrates the remarkable nature of the vineyard and is why it can produce a wine of such iconic distinction.
2007 Old Garden Mourvèdre is perfectly poised and quite possibly the finest of the decade. It will age beautifully for at least ten years.
What the critics think
2007 – “Mourvedre is one of the ‘Rhone’ red varieties, but it has long been part of Australia’s wine scene, where for most of its history it was known as Mataro. As a blending variety it adds its own robust personality to shiraz and grenache, but in recent years a few straight Mourvèdres have arrived on the market. Made from vines planted in 1853 by one Friedrich Koch, this hearty example opens with plum, blackcurrant and minty notes, as well as savoury dusty, tarry, meaty, old-vine complexity. It tastes concentrated, rather like a boiled down essence of the fruit and the vineyard, and it has a supple, complete feel in the mouth, with a long dry finish marked by perfectly balance fine-grained tannins”. Rating 5 star
Ralph Kyte-Powell – Wine of the Week – ‘Epicure’ The Age – 2 June 2009

2007 – “Treasured vines and treasured wine. Ok so the oak is a bit toffeed and sweet(we’d rather it be just a bit less), but that leathery, blackberried fruit power gains momentum as it travels across your tongue, the brakes then gentle applied by fine-grained tannins. Superb-quality wine”. Score 94 points
Campbell Mattinson & Gary Walsh – The Big Red Wine Book – 2009/2010

2007 -
"Bright and clear colour and hue; a fragrant bouquet leads into an extremely finely boned and structured palate, a quiet statement of superiority from 150 year-old vines.” Rating 96 points
James Halliday - Australian Wine Companion - 2010

2007 – “From the worlds oldest Mourvedre vines, light in colour and offering earthy, deep fragrance, this makes a sanguine expression. Ripe, smooth entry with plenty of acid that kicks in and very long, flowing tannins, deep coating, with dark, savoury plum and date flavour. Juicy finish, some tarry elements here too, it really lingers – very even and brooding with approachable, comforting old vine soul.” Rating; 93 points 4 ½ Star
