The start of the 2008 growing season was quite cool and damp and by November we were heading into a great Margaret River summer. Beautiful warm-to-hot days, mild nights and a lack of rainfall combined to produce one of the best red wine vintages the region has seen. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot yields were very low - between four and five tonnes per Hectare. The low-yielding vintage and perfect weather conditions allowed exemplary tannin ripeness and saw stunning, vibrant fruit flavours of blackberry, black cherry and mulberry develop in the fruit which was harvested during late March and early April.
Dark red, crimson colour. Lifted bouquet of cassis and mulberries with some dusty briary notes and hints of vanillin and cedar from the fine-grained oak. A fine elegant wine with an excellent concentration of juicy, ripe fruit displaying flavours of blackberry, dark cherry and mulberry. The silky tannins integrate seamlessly with the fruit.

What the critics think

2008 –“Girt By Sea is Voyager’s early-drinking Margaret River red, cabernet and merlot, with sherricks of malbec, cabernet franc, shiraz and grenache. The ’08 has excellent regional identity. Briar, blackcurrant, raspberry and violet aromas meet the nose. The palate is ripe and succulent, with cabernet austerity to give it tang. Drink over 8 years. Food Ideas; Rack of lamb, Vietnamese mint-wrapped beef. Rating; 4 ½ star.

2008 – “Hits the spot. Tastes of tasty bay leaf, chocolate, plum and mulberry. Nicely weighted, though it does have slightly raspy kitten’s tongue tannins. No matter. Regional flavours are gravelly herb-like. Balance is exemplary. It’s already good to drink, though it’s sure to cellar well. If you are so inclined. Rating; 91 points
