The Devil’s Whiskers are the two little marks that appear around the top lips on some people when they drink red wine – even just one glass. What ii suggests about these people is open to interpretation and not for us to say… As you drink this rich, intensely coloured shiraz beware the Devil’s Whiskers.
Aromas of spicy black currant, dark prune and sweet earth with nuances of eucalypt and sweet floral notes integrated with fine French oak.
Flavours of savoury black currant and rhubarb this wine shows great length and texture with fine fruit tannins complimented with carefully integrated oak.
McLaren Vale experienced cool conditions in December 2008 and most of January 2009 with temperatures only climbing above 30 degrees on three days up until a hot spell in late January. The rest of 2009 summer was relatively mild allowing the fruit to develop with balanced characters. This Shiraz (accompanied by a very small percentage of Viognier) was fermented in an open fermenter with heading down cap management and four cap treatments per day. The wine was gently pressed at dryness and aged for 14 months in new French oak Barriques. This Shiraz was sourced from a vineyard at Maslin’s Beach (located very close to the Gulf St. Vincent at the south-western end of McLaren Vale) and the foothills at the top of McMurtrie Road. Shiraz from the Maslin’s vineyard shows spicy aromatics and dark berry fruits. The McMurtire Shiraz has lovely structure giving solid backbone to the wine with intense mid to back palate presence. The small portion of Viognier from our McLaren Flat vineyard was co-fermented with the foothills parcel and contributes fine mid palate textures.

What the critics think

The single vineyard 2009 Kangarilla Road Devil's Whiskers Shiraz ($32) is so named because of the appearance of red marks often left above the upper lip after enjoying a couple of glasses of red wine.
"The marks often point upwards and could easily be mistaken for the Devil," explains Roseworthy graduate O'Brien. Devil's Whiskers is a very tidy wine, exhibiting big, bold savoury flavours and finely integrated French oak.
