The aim of this blend is to produce a fragrant, spicy and soft style that is more approachable as a young wine.
Fruit of blackberry and blueberry with strong aromas of licorice and spices. The aromatics are dark and brooding. The palate is fruit driven and rich with a long and spicy finish. Well balanced with lingering soft tannins.
Like a true family affair, we have named this little brother Shiraz; "Progeny" meaning 'descendents of'. It is made from a sampling of soft but bright Shiraz fruit from various soils and contours within the vineyards. It is co-fermented with a smidgeon of Viognier to get the benefit of the extra gentle tannins and lifted aromas. This Rhone-ish trick worked a treat in a very dry season that frightened the vines into producing fantastic flavours in both varieties. Fragrant dark berry aromas with our trademark aniseed and spice tell of the delicious flavours to come in a balanced, soft palate.
The 2009 vintage began with the driest end to winter and spring that Sanguine Estate has experienced so far. This low rainfall resulted in a dry soil profile and the vines responded to this by producing a small canopy and a reduced yield. A great spell of rain in December followed by a dry and hot January and February set the small crop up for an early harvest. Perfect conditions continued throughout harvest, cool but dry, leaving us with fantastic quality and an easy vintage in the winery.
Wine making notes - We utilize traditional winemaking practices such as small fermentation tanks, natural fermentation (i.e. no yeast additions) and gravity feeding. Whilst this can be quite labour intensive, we believe it ensures the preservation of natural fruit flavours and the Heathcote terrior character. This wine is a combination of Shiraz and Viognier (approx. 3%) that are hand picked at the same time and co-fermented to ensure good integration. As with all varieties produced at Sanguine Estate, the grapes were destemmed, lightly crushed and then naturally fermented with wild indigenous yeasts in small open fermenters. The wine is then transferred via gravity (to avoid pump shock) to predominantly French oak barriques (approximately 10% new) and left to mature for approximately 14 months.
