One of the great advantages to be had in vintage 2011 was to pick early. Styles that rely on freshness and natural acidity were picked before some of the problems created by unseasonal rain arrived because we pick our Rose of Virginia fruit at low baumes, it came into the winery completely disease free with the bunches firm and fresh an this reserves in the aromatics and mouthfeel of the 2011 Rose of Virginia.
Lovely vibrant crimson/magenta hue. Deep colour but not as dark as say the 2010, but still good depth. Delicious young Grenache lift is evident with a little touch of sweet marzipan that seems unique to this vintage.
A light touch to the palate, with just the right amount of acidity and flesh. Still remaining crisp and fresh avoiding any heaviness, just a nice quaffable weight. Will settle over the next couple of months ready for that first hint of spring.
The Rose of Virginia production involves a number of key techniques. Co-fermentation of the varieties gives us our lovely pink colour, and a variation in skin contact times allows us to arrive at just the right combination of colour and tannin.
The slow, cool fermentation is stopped when just a few grams of natural grape sugar are left in the wine. This to soften rather than sweeten.
Picking slightly early helps retain the natural acidity to give some zest and crispness on the palate.
Early bottling helps retain the crispness and fruit freshness. Enjoy now!
