Wine Region
Margaret River, Western Australia
Wine Maker
Vanya Cullen
In the early 1960's detailed climatic studies of various regions in Southwestern Australia revealed that during the winegrowing season, Margaret River's climate was similar to that of Bordeaux, particularly Pomerol. The conclusion that Margaret River was ideal for viticulture was first tested in Wilyabrup in 1966, when Diana and Kevin Cullen planted a trial acre of vines. The encouraging results led to the couple planting 18 acres of vines on their sheep and cattle farm in 1971.  It was to mark the beginning of Margaret River as a wine region.
Cullen Wines while remaining family owned has since evolved making quality wine from biodynamically grown grapes sourced exclusively from The Cullen Estate Vineyard and Mangan Vineyard.
Now under the direction of Vanya Cullen, Australia’s first female wine judge, and Qantas Winemaker of the Year in 2000, Cullen wines have never been better. Vanya has been relentless in her pursuit for excellence in the Cullen wines, with a great commitment to low yielding, bio-dynamically managed vineyards.
Whilst the Chardonnay, Semillon Sauvignon Blanc and Diana Madeline are widely considered amongst the best of their ilk, the other wines also demonstrate a similar dimension of individuality and quality. Vanya is a leading exponent of Biodynamic viticulture in Australia and as more and more of her 100% biodynamic wines are released, the reasons for her enthusiasm become very clear.
2003 - Cullen Vineyard certified Organic "A" Grade with the Biological Farmers Association of Australia.
2004 - Cullen Vineyard is certified "A" grade Biodynamic by the Biological Farmers.

What the critics have to say!
“One of the pioneers of Margaret River, which has always produced long-lived wines of highly individual style from the mature estate vineyards. The vineyard has progressed beyond organic to biodynamic certification and, subsequently, has become the first vineyard and winery in Australia to be certified carbon neutral. This requires the calculation of all the carbon used and the carbon dioxide emitted in the winery, and the carbon is then offset by the planting of new trees. Winemaking is now in the hands of Vanya Cullen, daughter of the founders; she is possessed of an extraordinarily good palate. It is impossible to single out any particular wine from the top echelon; all are superb.” 5 Star winery rating.
