This family owned and operated business is a dream of Doug and Joy Bowen that has gradually been evolving over the past 35 years and now involves their daughter, Emma. Located on prime Coonawarra terra rossa soil, producing a small quintessential range of classic Coonawarra wines. The vineyards occupy 33 hectares of prime terra rossa soil. Planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Chardonnay.
The Bowen philosophy for the style of wine that they produce begins with the vineyard, located on traditional prime terra rossa soil of Coonawarra. They also have a very strong belief in the traditional hand pruning of their vines, combined with an arch cane trellis system. The Bowens believe; “this improves the evenness of budburst, bunch exposure and ripeness, but more importantly, this method of pruning ensures balanced vines, therefore the vine will produce fruit of optimum quality. It is this optimum fruit that makes these bench mark wines which reflect the true characteristics of Coonawarra - strong varietal aromas, big flavours and soft balanced tannins.”

What the critics have to say!

“………There is nothing like a father and daughter team……..Doug and Emma Bowen……….emphasis here on vineyard practices………with vines individually hand pruned, arch-cane trained since 1989………Certain Doug Bowen has produced some great wines down the years, for the 1979 Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and the 1989 Bowen Estate Shiraz were both drinking well almost two decades later and had aged better than some Bordeaux that I could mention!............their two 2005s were most impressive, imbued with silky textures that verge of sumptuousness. These are well crafted wines that should impart vinous delights for a decade………”.

2007 – Cabernet Sauvignon - “… … .... Decidedly Médoc-like on the nose, offering cedary / tobacco complexity. The palate is firm, but balanced, and strongly varietal, finishing with a pleasant, lingering dryness… … ...” Highly Recommended

2006 Cabernet Sauvignon - “………If you want to explain to someone who has never tried Coonawarra cabernet what’s so special about this unique combination of grape and place, open this wine, with its gorgeous purity of sweetly herbal, blackcurrant fruit………”
