Wine Region Waiheke Island, New Zealand
Wine Maker Duncan McTavish
Located at the Eastern end of Waiheke Island, Man O' War Station is spread across 4500 acres of rugged coastal farmland.
The Man O' War Vineyards are made up of a patchwork of almost 90 small sites, each a strategic match of aspect, altitude, soil type and vine.
Wine growing began here in 1993, today Man O’ War has 150 acres of vines planted in almost 90 individual hillside blocks, each with a distinct soil profile and microclimate. Every single block bears the footprints, and in some instances the names, of those who transformed Man O’ War’s rugged hillsides into a spectacular patchwork of vines.
Each block has been meticulously designed with different rootstocks, clones and planting densities to best match the specific terroir on offer. And every small parcel of strategically placed vines is carefully tended and harvested by hand to ensure Man O’ War’s wines earn their place amongst the world’s best
Man O’ War’s hilltops feature a volcanic soil mixed with clay forming the loam. The white varieties have been carefully placed high on these exposed hilltops of so that they benefit from cooling sea breezes, extending their growing season and giving them great concentration and minerality. While the red varieties are draped down precipitously steep and sheltered clay hillsides enjoying the heat and drainage provided, promoting serious intensity and depth.
The collection of vineyards provide our winemaking team with the broadest possible palette from which to blend world class wines that are unique expressions of Man O’ War.
Duncan McTavish graduated from Lincoln University in New Zealand as the inaugural graduate of the Bachelor of Viticulture and Oenology degree program in 1998. Following his studies he embarked on a global journey to study, taste and learn from the great wine growing regions of the world working harvests in Europe in Burgundy, the Rheingau and the Mosel and throughout the New World regions of California, Australia and New Zealand before eventually settling in the South Islands Waipara Valley. After 8 years crafting fine Pinot noir and elegant Riesling in Waipara and motivated by the potential to create perhaps New Zealand's greatest union of Grape and Land he has arrived at Man O' War Vineyards with a goal to create iconic New Zealand wines.

What the critics think!
2008 Ironclad Bordeaux – “An arresting Bordeaux Blend. Smoky from oak ageing with magnificent berry fruits and leathery undertones. Enjoy now to 10 years.” 1st Prize
Stephen Spurrier -  Best New World Red Wine -  January 2010

2008 Ironclad Bordeaux - “Elegance on a grand scale. Fine, tight red with layers of fruit/berry and savoury, spicy flavours. Aromatic wine with a pleasing floral lift. An impressive Bordeaux blend.” Rating 93 points
Bob Campbell MW – Feb 2010

2008 Dreadnought Syrah – “Stunning wine with a heady perfume that includes lovely floral notes.
Very elegant red with ripe berryfruit flavours interwoven with Oriental spices.
It has a great texture and extraordinary power.” Rating 94 points
Bob Campbell MW – Feb 2010

2008 Chardonnay – “This one is big, the way Jonah was at his peak: toned, powerful, mesmerizing. Layers of toasty oak do not detract from the ripe fruit at the heart of this wine. Bring on the pork belly and crackling.” Rating 5 star
