Organic and bio-dynamic principles of farming were little known until they were adopted by many of the top-quality producers in France in the 1980’s.

Organic wine production has been spreading slowly but steadily throughout the world with Vanya Cullen of Cullen Wines in Margaret River WA a leading pioneer in Australia.

In short, organic systems of grape growing are broadly defined as shunning man made compounds such as fertilisers, fungicides and pesticides as well as anything that has been genetically modified.

The primary concern for all organic farmers is soil health; for without a healthy, living soil in which to grow, the vine will struggle and the grower is more likely to become reliant on chemical intervention.

Winemakers and viticulturalists view their vineyards as a living organism which can be maintained in a self sustaining way ensuring minimal impact on the environment.

Biodynamics furthers these principles by using products generated on the same property; ensuring wines express a closer relationship between the wine and vineyard the grapes are grow in. It is a more holistic approach to farming focused on creating a harmonic relationship between the produce and its surrounds. The Earth is seen as a living organism with diurnal and seasonal rhythms dependant on, and receptive to, cosmic cycles. Agricultural work is timed to coincide with these rhythms and biodynamic spray and compost preparations are used, at specified times, on the land or directly on the crops to heighten their potentially beneficial effects.

Organic and Biodynamic wine production is “hands off” in man-made interventions and “hands on” in supporting Nature to do its thing. The emphasis is on wine quality and not quantity, so why wouldn’t you support them?
