Wine Region
Waipara Valley, New Zealand
Wine Maker
Matthew Donaldson & Lynette Hudson
The name and logo reflect the location and unique, regionally distinct wines. Main Divide is the local name for the mighty range of Southern Alps which form the backbone of Te Wai Pounamu (the South Island of New Zealand). The aim is to produce wines which reflect the unspoilt freshness, purity, vigour and cool climate of the south, while retaining in each its individual regional and varietal character.

A handful of selected South Island vineyards have been chosen because of their unique situations or terroir and the quality of their grapes. Main Divide work with the growers of these vineyards throughout the season to obtain quality fruit, all of which is then hand-crafted into wine by the Donaldson Family at their Waipara winery.

Main Divide's philosophy is based on individuality and harmony. To produce distinctive, vibrant wines with lively fruit flavours, which at the same time are integrated and harmonious. Subtle intertwining of complimentary aromas and flavours provides the extra dimension of complexity.

Main Divide’s aim is to grow grapes of the highest quality which fully express the features of the vineyard and to handle these with the utmost respect. Natural methods and as little intervention as possible at all stages from vine to bottle typify the approach. Main Divide believe in sustainable viticultural management, organic techniques, low crop levels, minimal handling of fruit during processing and gentle pressing. We allow wines to go through natural malolactic fermentation and clarify by settling. The red wines are bottled without filtration.

What the critics have to say!
More an alternative label than a second label from the highly respected Kiwi winery Pegasus Bay. Where as the corporate label is used only for estate fruit grown in the family vineyard at Waipara, North Canterbury, South Island, the Main Divide derives from various other areas. Among the range are a lovely juicy Pinot Noir and a thoroughly decent Sauvignon Blanc…. Keep an eye out for this label.
