Take some of the Barossa's greatest vineyards, one of Australia's most impressive winemakers, a good dose of creative tension and what you get is Fox Gordon. It's a quality-conscious label specialising in single-variety reds.
Renowned winemaker Natasha Mooney and her two friends, Jane Gordon and Rachel Atkins nee Fox, came up with the idea a few years ago. Jane and Rachel were finance professionals seeking a sea change, while Natasha was keen to make her own handcrafted premium wines. It didn't take long for the threesome to turn a flight of fancy into a plan of action.
Natasha has an impressive resume, which includes making premium red and white wines at Penfolds and Lindemans, and at Barossa Valley Estate (BVE) where she was responsible for making the internationally acclaimed E&E Black Pepper Shiraz. In 1999, it rated as Australia's highest-scoring wine in US Wine Spectator magazine and was voted 'Best Red Wine' in UK Wine.
Consistency of style is the order of the day at Fox Gordon. "There are no surprises with our wines," says Natasha. "You know exactly what you're getting – top quality Barossa reds." This is achieved by blending together the best parcels of fruit to create a perfect single-variety wine.
Fox Gordon has the tell-tale signs of a winner. Like the stellar E&E Black Pepper Shiraz, Hannah's Swing is a fruit-forward wine superbly balanced with sweet vanillin oak. It is deceptively elegant, despite its richness and power.
The King Louis Cabernet Sauvignon has slightly savoury oak flavours, showing a little more restraint than the traditional style for this region.
Both feature soft velvety tannins within a firm structure, showing the promise of longevity. This, along with the stand-out quality offered, highlights the brand's value.
These reds are not tricked-up, they're made simply and traditionally using new tight-grained oak barriques by Mercier French coopers. Maturation is for 18 months – the Shiraz in a 30:70 combination of American and French oak, and the Cabernet in 100% French.
