The Margan brand’s first vintage was 1997. A state of the art winery was completed on the Margan “Ceres Hill” property in time for the 1998 vintage. The winery has been built to handle up to 1000 tonnes of fruit using only the best equipment available to make wines of outstanding varietal definition. The wines are carefully hand-crafted under the winemaking skills of Andrew Margan. With over 25 vintages of experience both in Australia (specifically Tyrrell’s Wines), and in Europe, Andrew Margan combines his understanding of vineyard management with his winemaking expertise to craft wines of individual character and finesse.
The six varietals produced under the Margan label have been selected as the best varietals the Hunter Valley can produce. The grapes are selected from the Margan vineyards, and from local Broke Fordwich growers, on the basis of flavour. All the vineyards selected are low yielding (average of 2 tonne per acre) which assists in gaining intense varietal fruit flavours in the finished wines. The wines are produced in the Margan winery using methods that preserve those flavours allowing the wine lover to appreciate the regional varietal definition of the wine to its optimum.
Lisa Margan, wife of Andrew, and mother of three, provides the backup marketing role for the Margan brand. This allows Andrew & Lisa control of their product from the vineyard through to the end user. This control gives the Margan brand the opportunity to bring you wines of exceptionally high quality from low yielding vineyards at exceptionally reasonable prices.
The goal of Margan Family Winegrowers is to be considered by the Australian market as a family run company consistently producing some of the best Hunter Valley varietals, from the Broke Fordwich sub-region, available in the market.
