The Willson family purchased the 100-acre lucerne farm called "Bremerton Lodge" at Langhorne Creek in South Australia for a change in lifestyle. After experimenting with small batches of grapes and making wine for 4 years, an 8 acre vineyard was planted in 1991.
In December 1992, floods devastated the property and buildings, so the Willson family developed a structured plan to turn the farm into a vineyard and to expand into wine production. The partnership now has 113 acres of vineyard and 45% interest in another 175 acres of vineyard it developed and manages at Langhorne Creek.
Bremerton Wines remains a family business involving Craig Willson as Managing Director, Mignonne Willson as our food consultant for cellar door lunches, Rebecca Willson as the Winemaker, and Lucy Willson as Marketing Manager. A full time Vineyard Manager and four permanent vineyard employees look after the vineyard. A full time Financial and Administration Manager, Cellar Door Manager, National Sales Manager and Administration and Cellar Door Assistant are also employed.
Matilda Plains is the new winemaking base for all Bremerton Wines. First operated in 2002 as a grape crushing and winemaking facility, it specializes in small batch processing to enable our wines to be hand crafted with full attention to quality control. It is all housed in an architecturally designed building utilizing the latest technology. The result is a modern, energy efficient, low environmental impact winery. In March 2004 a new 520 sq metre insulated barrel storage facility was completed, thus making Matilda Plains a fully integrated winemaking facility.
The predominant varieties grown are Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot, with small plantings of Sauvignon Blanc, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Malbec and Petit Verdot.
